Giorgia Meloni, Serial Racist Part II

The ChatGPT Sessions

The apple never falls far from the tree. Particularly when it comes to post-fascist parties.

Newly woke Meloni. Rishi Sunak remix, 27 April.

Nothing epitomises this more than Italy’s Fratelli d’Italia, which traces its lineage directly back to Benito Mussolini’s Partito Nazionale Fascista (PNF) and its successor, the Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI), in which Premier Giorgia Meloni got her start in politics.

Yet, during her 2022 election campaign, Meloni successfully rebranded herself as a conservative who rejects the authoritarianism and prejudice of her party affiliations.

Nonetheless, Giorgia Meloni continues to extol the virtues of Mussolini’s politics and legacy, and her ministers routinely make statements to the press about how migrants threaten to replace Europeans and deny that fascists killed Jews in Italy.

It’s like that. The examples are legion and predictable. Particularly on racial issues, where Meloni’s xenophobic opinions have been recorded by European media for nearly three decades.

In the first article in this series, we queried the world’s most popular generative artificial intelligence application ChatGPT about the Fratelli d’Italia chief’s biggest Achilles heel, Antisemitism. The results are what you’d expect.

For this second edition, we reproduce our conversation with the AI about her racism. This interview was conducted in March before ChatGPT was briefly banned in Italy.

Meloni has expressed a range of views on issues related to immigration and refugees, and her political party, Fratelli d’Italia, has been critical of policies that promote open borders and mass migration. Given this context, it is fair to say that Meloni’s relationship with Italy’s black community, as well as with other minority groups, is likely to be strained or contentious. What has Giorgia Meloni said about Italian colonialism?

Giorgia Meloni has made various statements about Italian colonialism. In general, she has expressed pride in Italy’s historical achievements and has criticized what she sees as attempts to denigrate Italy’s past. In 2011, she caused controversy when she stated that the 1911-1943 Libyan genocide committed by Italian forces was not a genocide. She argued that the term “genocide” did not apply because the Italian forces were not acting with the intention of exterminating the Libyan people. Instead, she argued that the Italians were fighting against “Arab nationalism” and that their actions were part of a broader struggle for control of North Africa.

In 2017, Meloni argued that Italy should celebrate its colonial past, stating that “if the United Kingdom can celebrate its empire, we should be able to celebrate our colonial history.” However, she also acknowledged that there were some “dark moments” in Italy’s past and called for a balanced and honest discussion of the country’s colonial legacy.

However, the term is often criticized as being overly simplistic and as promoting prejudice and discrimination against Muslim individuals and communities.

At the same time, Meloni has been accused by some of promoting anti-Muslim and xenophobic sentiments in her political messaging, which may contribute to an environment of division and mistrust that can fuel extremist ideologies and radicalization.
